How Does a Liquid Cold Plate Work?
The Liquid Cold Plate (LCP) acts as a core part of liquid cooling systems. It efficiently transfers heat from high – heat – load surfaces to the circulating fluid, directly shaping the cooling system’s overall performance.
In essence, a liquid cold plate has precision – engineered flow channels inside a metal plate. We mount electronic components on the cold plate’s surface. Then, apply a heat – conducting medium (like thermal paste or pads) between the components and the plate to maximize heat transfer. Coolant enters via the inlet, absorbs heat as it flows through the channels, and exits through the outlet, carrying the heat away. While water or water – glycol mixtures are the most common coolants, you can also use alternatives like oil, gasoline, or refrigerants based on application needs.
Construction Methods for Liquid Cold Plates
Cold plate designs vary depending on performance goals, material limits, and environmental factors:
1. Cross – Drilled Holes
This cost – effective method drills intersecting holes in a plate to create flow paths. We plug unused holes. However, flow patterns stay limited to straight lines.
2. Tube Embedding
First, cut a groove into the plate. Then insert a tube — either near the top surface (for single – side cooling) or deeper (for dual – side cooling). This offers flexibility but limits thermal performance because of the tube’s small surface area.
3. Machined Channels with Extended Surfaces
For better efficiency, machine plates to add flow passages. Then seal them with a cover (flat or machined). Extended surfaces (e.g., in – place machined fins or folded fins) boost fluid contact area. Choose assembly methods like gaskets/screws, glue, brazing, or welding based on performance and environmental needs.
Common Types of Liquid Cold Plates
Liquid cold plates get classified by construction methods, materials, and cooling principles. Each type fits specific thermal management needs. Here are the most popular ones:
1. Machined Channel Cold Plates
The most widely used type. It has precision – machined flow channels (grooves/cavities) in an aluminum or copper base plate. Then, a cover plate seals it. Often, we add extended surfaces (fins/pins) in channels to increase heat transfer area. Ideal for medium – to – high heat loads (200–500W) in data centers or industrial electronics.
2. Skived Fin Cold Plates
We manufacture these by skiving (shaving) thin metal fins directly from the base plate, creating integrated, high – density fin structures. This design cuts down thermal resistance between fins and the base, delivering great heat dissipation efficiency. Suits applications needing compact, lightweight solutions (e.g., EV batteries).
3. Brazed Cold Plates
These use vacuum brazing or furnace brazing to bond fins, channels, and cover plates into one leak – proof unit. Brazing ensures strong, uniform joints without flux residue — making them ideal for high – pressure, high – temperature environments (e.g., power electronics, military equipment).
4. Tube – in – Plate Cold Plates
Embed a metal tube (copper/aluminum) into a machined groove in the base plate. Then secure it via press – fitting, gluing, or brazing. Flow paths follow the tube’s shape, offering design flexibility. Often used for low – to – medium heat loads or dual – side cooling scenarios.
5. Micro – Channel Cold Plates
Features tiny, dense channels (0.5–2mm diameter) to maximize fluid contact area. Designed for high – heat – flux applications (over 500W/cm²), like laser diodes or CPU cooling, where rapid heat removal matters most.
Each type balances factors like cost, thermal efficiency, weight, and durability. So, they work well across industries — from automotive and aerospace to computing and renewable energy.
