Liquid Cold Plates Built Around Your Cooling Layout
Liquid cold plates are used when air cooling is not enough for high heat flux components. BY Thermal helps convert your cooling concept, mounting interface and drawing package into manufacturable cold plate parts for prototype and production projects.
The manufacturing route is selected around the actual coolant path, material, pressure requirement, joining method, mounting interface and production quantity rather than forcing every project into one standard cold plate structure.
Cold plates for IGBT modules, power supplies, converters, inverters and other high-power electronic assemblies.
Machined mounting surfaces, inlet and outlet ports, internal coolant paths and fastening features based on your drawings.
Send 2D drawings, 3D files, material requirements and cooling interface details for manufacturability review and quotation.
Embedded tube, machined channel, microchannel, brazed and FSW structures can be evaluated against the project requirements.
Cold Plate Manufacturing Options
Different liquid cold plate structures suit different thermal loads, pressure requirements, flow paths and cost targets. The final process should be selected after reviewing the drawing, coolant, sealing method and assembly environment.
Embedded Tube Cold Plates
Suitable for many industrial cooling applications where formed metal tubing is embedded into a machined base plate.
CNC Machined Channel Cold Plates
Used when the coolant path, mounting surface and port layout require precise machining from aluminum or copper blocks.
Microchannel Cold Plates
Used for compact high heat flux cooling where dense internal coolant passages are required. Specific channel capability must be confirmed against the actual drawing.
Brazed Cold Plates
Used for sealed multi-part cold plate structures where joined plates form the internal coolant path.
FSW Cold Plates
Friction stir welding can be used for selected aluminum cold plate designs requiring a sealed cover plate and machined internal coolant channels.
Cold Plate Assemblies
Cold plates can include machining, surface treatment, port interfaces and assembly steps according to the approved drawing.
Microchannel Cold Plates for High Heat Flux Cooling
Microchannel cold plates use dense internal coolant passages to increase heat-transfer area and bring the coolant closer to localized high heat flux regions. They can be suitable for compact electronics, AI/GPU modules, laser systems and other applications where conventional channel layouts cannot provide enough heat-transfer density.
The design is not only about making channels smaller. Channel geometry and flow distribution must be evaluated together with heat transfer, flow resistance and pressure drop. A smaller passage can increase local heat-transfer potential while also increasing hydraulic resistance or sensitivity to contamination.
Before quotation, the coolant, target flow rate, allowable pressure drop, sealing or joining method, cleanliness requirement and leak-test criteria should be reviewed with the drawing.
Channel layout, density and manufacturability are reviewed against the actual cold plate geometry rather than a fixed catalog limit.
Target coolant flow helps determine whether the internal layout can distribute coolant effectively across the heated region.
Fine passages increase hydraulic resistance, so allowable pressure drop must be considered together with heat-transfer performance.
Coolant chemistry and operating environment affect material, corrosion, cleanliness and sealing considerations.
Cover structure and joining process are selected around material, channel layout, pressure requirement and production needs.
Test pressure, acceptance criteria and internal cleanliness requirements should be defined before quotation and production.
Process Selection Guide
The right manufacturing process depends on the coolant path, thermal load, material, sealing method, pressure requirement and production structure.
| Cold Plate Type | Typical Use | Common Material | What to Confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Embedded Tube Cold Plate | Industrial electronics and general liquid cooling projects | Aluminum base with copper or stainless tube options | Tube route, bend radius, port type and contact surface |
| CNC Machined Channel Cold Plate | Custom coolant paths and machined mounting interfaces | Aluminum or copper | Channel geometry, cover method, sealing method and pressure requirement |
| Microchannel Cold Plate | Compact high heat flux cooling designs | Aluminum or copper | Channel geometry, flow rate, coolant, pressure drop, cleanliness and inspection method |
| Brazed Cold Plate | Sealed multi-layer plate structures | Aluminum or copper depending on design | Brazing structure, leakage requirement and surface flatness requirement |
| FSW Cold Plate | Aluminum channel plates with welded cover structures | Aluminum | Weld path, cover thickness, post-machining and leakage test requirement |
Exact dimensions, tolerances, pressure ratings, microchannel capability and testing standards must be confirmed against the actual drawing and application requirements.

View Cold Plate Examples →Custom Liquid Cold Plate FAQ
Can BY Thermal manufacture liquid cold plates from my drawings?
Yes. BY Thermal manufactures custom liquid cold plates based on customer 2D drawings, 3D models and project requirements. We review manufacturability before quotation.
Can BY Thermal manufacture microchannel or microfluidic cold plates?
BY Thermal can evaluate custom microchannel and microfluidic cold plate projects for high heat flux liquid cooling. Channel geometry, material, coolant, flow rate, pressure drop, joining method, cleanliness and testing requirements should be reviewed against the actual drawing before manufacturing capability and quotation are confirmed.
What materials are available for custom cold plates?
Aluminum and copper are common options. The final material should be selected according to the drawing, coolant, weight target, corrosion environment and thermal requirements.
Which cold plate process should I choose?
Embedded tube, CNC machined channel, microchannel, brazed and friction stir welded structures suit different applications. Process selection should consider thermal load, internal flow path, pressure requirement, sealing method, material and production quantity.
Does a smaller microchannel always improve cooling performance?
No. Smaller coolant passages can increase heat-transfer area, but they can also increase flow resistance and pressure drop. Channel geometry, flow distribution, coolant conditions and pumping requirements must be evaluated together.
What information is needed for a microchannel cold plate quotation?
Please provide the 2D and 3D drawings together with available information about material, heat source, coolant, target flow rate, allowable pressure drop, port interface, sealing method, working pressure, leak-test criteria, cleanliness requirement and estimated quantity.
Can BY Thermal support laser cooling plate projects?
Yes. BY Thermal supports custom liquid cooling plates for laser equipment and related industrial cooling applications.
