What Is an Extruded Heat Sink?

What Is an Aluminum Extruded Heat Sink?

An aluminum extruded heat sink (also called an extrusion heat sink or extruded aluminum heat sink) is produced by heating aluminum billets to 520–540℃ and forcing the metal under high pressure through a precision die to create a continuous finned profile. It is one of the most cost-effective heat sink manufacturing methods, offering fast production, lightweight construction and easy customization for standard applications.

Extrusion alone covers many passive cooling jobs. When your design needs precision mounting features or higher heat flux, we add two upgrade paths — CNC machining and heat pipe integration — so you get the low cost of an extruded profile and the performance of a machined or two-phase thermal solution. See the extrusion process and the full extruded heatsink range for more detail.

Precision Extruded Heat Sinks, CNC Machined to Your Drawing

Extrusion gives you a low-cost, high-volume finned profile. CNC machining turns it into a ready-to-assemble part with precise mechanical features that extrusion alone cannot produce.

  • Mounting holes, tapped holes, slots and counterbores held to tight tolerances
  • Stepped bases, pockets and complex secondary geometry
  • Typical machining tolerance of ±0.05 mm (confirmed per drawing)
  • Cut-to-length, drilled, tapped, deburred and ready for assembly

Extruded Heat Sinks with Embedded Copper Heat Pipes

Plain aluminum is limited by its thermal conductivity. By embedding sealed copper heat pipes into the extruded base, heat moves quickly from a concentrated source across the whole fin array — without the cost of skiving or liquid cooling.

  • Fast heat spreading from hot spots to the full fin field
  • Compact, low-profile designs with a smaller fin footprint
  • Round or flat heat pipes, custom layouts for your power map
  • Cost-effective for medium-to-high power electronics

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a skived heat sink and an extruded heat sink?
A skived heat sink is cut from a solid aluminum or copper block with a precision cutting tool to form ultra-thin, high-density integrated fins, while an extruded heat sink is formed by forcing heated aluminum through a die to create a continuous profile. Extrusion offers lower tooling cost and faster, more scalable production; skiving enables thinner fins and better performance per volume for high-density designs.
What aluminum alloys do you use for extruded heat sinks?
AL6063-T5 is our standard alloy for extruded heat sinks thanks to its excellent thermal conductivity, formability and machinability. We also work with AL6061-T6 for higher strength and AL3003 where corrosion resistance matters, depending on your application.
Can you CNC machine an extruded heat sink?
Yes. After extrusion we can mill, drill, tap, ream and slot the profile to add mounting holes, threaded holes, stepped bases, pockets and other features that cannot be formed by extrusion alone, typically holding ±0.05 mm. Final tolerances are confirmed during engineering review of your drawing.
Can you add heat pipes to an extruded aluminum heat sink?
Yes. We embed copper heat pipes (round or flat) into the extruded aluminum base to spread heat from a concentrated source across the full fin array. This combination is ideal for high-heat-flux applications such as high-power LEDs, IGBT modules, telecom base stations and servo drives where a plain extrusion cannot move enough heat.
What is the lead time for a custom extruded heat sink prototype?
Our typical prototype lead time is 15–25 days from drawing approval, depending on profile complexity, machining and surface treatment requirements. Tooling for new extrusion dies is produced separately and confirmed on a per-project basis.
Do you offer surface treatment and assembly?
Yes. We offer clear or black anodizing, sandblasting, powder coating and plating, as well as assembly services including heat pipe soldering, hardware insertion and TIM application, all performed in-house to keep quality and lead times under control.
What is the minimum order quantity?
MOQ depends on the profile, die status and machining complexity. Standard profiles and existing dies can run low quantities; new dies are typically amortized over the order volume. Send us your drawing for a clear MOQ and price.
